Malaysia Public Holidays 2012/2013 Calendar

Malaysia has countless cultural festivals and public holidays all year round. It’s truly a land of festivals mostly because there are some many different ethnic groups with their own traditions.  It’s not surprising that the number of public holidays in other regions is relatively small compared to the number in Malaysia.  We counted more than forty public holidays but only some of them are national. The expected dates for public holidays and festivals in Malaysia 2012 and 2013 are shown in the list below.

Holidays falling on the weekend, including those that are always celebrated on Sunday, are observed the following Monday. Please note that Friday and Saturday are the weekend in Kedah, Kelantan, and Trengganu states. So, if a public holiday in these states falls on Saturday, it’s observed the following Sunday.

New Year’s Day

Occasion: Official birthday of the state of Kedah’s Sultan

Chinese New Year

 

Date 2012: Monday and Tuesday, 23-24 January
Date 2013: Sunday and Monday, 10-11 February
Occasion: Celebrated by the Chinese community to mark the start of the lunar calendar year. Most important festival of the Chinese lunar calendar. Chinese mark the occasion by visiting fellow family and friends, accompanied by various different cultures and customs inherited from generation to generation.
States applicable to: National except for Kelantan and Terengganu on 2nd day of New Year.

Federal Territory Day

Date 2012: Wednesday, 1 February
Date 2013: Friday, 1 February
Occasion: Anniversary to mark Kuala Lumpur as a federal territory which was formed in 1974. Now celebrated by three other federal territories: Labuan in Sabah and Putrajaya in Kuala Lumpur.

Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday (Maulidur Rasul)

Date 2012: Sunday, 5 February
Date 2013: Thursday, 24 January
Occasion: Marks the birthday of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, believed to be on the 12th day of the 3rd month of the Islamic Calendar.
States applicable to: National

Thaipusam

Date 2012: Tuesday, 7 February
Date 2013: Sunday, 27 January
Occasion: Celebrated by the Indian Tamil community (mostly of Hindu faith) on the full moon in the Thai month of the Tamil calendar. The festival is held to mark the occasion where Lord Murugan vanquished the evil demon Soorapadam, and devotees usually carry kavadis in large possessions to certain places of worship in the country.
States applicable to: Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Selangor only.

Anniversary of Installation of Sultan of Terengganu

Good Friday

Occasion: Observed primarily by the Christians (large population of Malaysian Christians in Sabah and Sarawak) to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Installation of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong

Occasion: To commemorate the installation of Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the head of state of Malaysia.

Declaration of Malacca as a Historical City

Date 2012: Sunday, 15 April
Date 2013: Monday, 15 April
Occasion: Melaka has over 600 years of history and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since its commemoration as a historical city in 1989, every year, the citizens of Melaka celebrate with a grand parade of different cultural troupes, floats, trishaws and musical bands.

Sultan of Perak’s Birthday

Occasion: Hari Hol is a day when the citizens of the state remember the glorious past, and pay tribute or gratitude to the past Sultans and royalties of the state.

Raja Perlis’ Birthday

Occasion: Official birthday of the state of Perlis’s sultan.

Harvest Festival

Date 2012: Wednesday and Thursday, 30-31 May
Date 2013: Thursday and Friday, 30-31 May
Occasion: Better known as Pesta Ka’amatan, the harvest festival is held to celebrate the end of the planting cycle of rice. The indigenous people in villages in the state of Sabah thank their deities and spirits for a good harvest and to bless for an even better harvest the following year.

Hari Gawai

Date 2012: Friday and Saturday, 1-2 June
Date 2013: Saturday and Sunday, 1-2 June
Occasion: Hari Gawai is Sarawak’s own harvest festival, held also to commemorate the successful end of a harvest season for rice. It is celebrated by the indigenous people in Sarawak: the Iban, the Dayak and the Bidayuh people. The festival is usually celebrated with lots of drinking (rice wine), eating and dancing in traditional longhouses of the indigenous people.

Occasion: Official birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the head of state of Malaysia.

Israk & Mikraj

Occasion: The Israk & Mikraj is an extremely holy day in the Islamic calendar where members of the Muslim faith commemorate the day where Prophet Muhammad took a physical and spiritual journey during a single night in the year 621. In the journey, Muhammad is said to have traveled by steed to the furthest mosque to lead other prophets in prayer and then ascended to heaven where he spoke to Allah and received instructions on the number of times to offer prayers every day.

Nuzul Al-Quran

Occasion: Occurs on the 17th day of the Ramadan month of the Muslim lunar calendar. The day marks the revelation of the first verse of the holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad.
States applicable to: Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Selangor and Terengganu only

Hari Raya Puasa

Date 2012: Sunday and Monday, 19-20 August
Date 2013: Thursday and Friday, 8-9 August
Occasion: Commemorates the ending of the fasting month. Often seen as the most important event on the Muslim calendar. On this day, Muslims break their month-long fast and ask for forgiveness from their elders.

Occasion: Commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah, before Allah intervened to provide him with a sheep to sacrifice instead. The occasion also commemorates the conclusion of the annual Haj- the pilgrimage to Mecca, where upon completion of the Haj, the men are given the title of Haji and the women Hajjah. An animal is usually sacrificed and its meat distributed among relatives and the poor.

Deepavali (Diwali)

Occasion: Also known as the festival of lights, Deepavali or Diwali is celebrated by the Hindu Tamil community and marks the triumph of good over evil. Oil lamps are usually lighted to signify this, and during the festival, Hindus celebrate by wearing new clothes, visiting friends and family accompanied by eating. The festival is similar to how Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Puasa are celebrated.
